Knee pain usually occurs due to an injury stemming from the overuse of the knee joint, sudden accidents or severe disorders such as arthritis. Knee pain is characterized by severe pain in and around the knee. The pain can vary from mild to debilitating (in case of rheumatism and other joint disorders). Knee pain can occur in any part of the knee such as the cartilage, ligaments (meniscus), kneecap (patella) and knee joint (fibula, tibia and femur).
Symptoms of Knee Pain-
Usually, the intensity of knee pain increases overtime. Symptoms of knee pain include difficulty in walking due to knee instability, discomfort that generally results in limping, ligament damage that makes it difficult to ascend or descend a flight of stairs, inability to bend the knee, swelling, redness and an inability to move the knee around.
Causes of Knee Pain-
Severe injuries such as meniscal tear, torn ligaments and broken bone are major causes of knee pain. Disorders such as arthritis, bursitis (inflammation of the bursae, which act as the joint cushions), tendinitis (inflammation of the muscle-bone connective tissue), patellar syndrome (pain in the front of the knees) and osteoarthritis are also some of the leading causes of knee pain.
