The first twelve weeks of pregnancy are fraught with complications that lead to bleeding in most women. Though sometimes the bleeding may be harmless, other times it may need immediate treatment. There may be various reasons for the bleeding. Some of them are:

Sudden hormonal change
Sexual intercourse
Bleeding also occurs when the fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterine wall. This condition is known as implantation bleeding.

Though all these are considered as harmless, there are few which may require urgent attention.

Some of them are-

  1. Bleeding may occur when the egg is implanted but never fertilized in the uterus. This condition is known as chemical pregnancy and must be immediately treated.
  2. Bleeding in the initial stages of pregnancy may also indicate a miscarriage. This is followed by pain in the abdomen and cramps.
  3. Sometimes an abnormal growth in the placenta or the fetus too may lead to bleeding.

Bleeding during pregnancy, harmless or harmful is a serious concern. There are things that one must do to check the bleeding at such an occasion. Few of them are:

  1. Visiting a Doctor: Seeking medical assistance is a must if bleeding during the early months of pregnancy occurs. If the bleeding is heavy, then visiting a doctor is mandatory.
  2. Ultrasound Examination: This is one of the most common ways to check bleeding and determine the cause. An ultrasound examination gives the most accurate reason for the bleeding. Subsequently, corrective measures are taken.
  3. Pelvic Examination: This is an important way to check bleeding during pregnancy. The pelvic exam determines how much blood has been lost and how much bleeding has occurred. This examination also takes into account the location and the intensity of the bleeding.
  4. Blood Tests: Undergoing blood test is imperative in the occasion of blood loss during pregnancy. During pregnancy, the body makes up human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). At this stage, a blood test will help to determine if the concerned person would require treatment.
  5. Bottom line: Any vaginal bleeding during pregnancy can be a symptom of a larger problem, so it’s important that you call your doctor right away. Be prepared to give information about the amount of blood you’ve lost and a description of how you’re feeling overall. You should also be seen if the bleeding is persistent or accompanied by pain or a fever. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.
